Yes, you’ve heard that people climbed Mt. Everest “because it was there.” So, if writers write because “it isn’t there,” what is the “it” we’re looking for? For some writers, it’s a sense of self resulting from prosody or poetry; for others, it’s a sense of the world, coming from the explorations one conducts in the process of writing itself. For still others, it’s that subtle boundary between the personal and the public that needs exploration, that in fact is the big reward in writing, aside from having an audience of people who’ll read and offer applause or comment.
